Dear Richard

Hi everyone and welcome to my Dear Richard column!  We've brought it back, and  I feel a little bit like Dear Abby!   We will be posting one or two new questions each week, on Wednesday.

But before I can choose questions to answer, you have to start sending me questions.   So, if you have a question you'd like me to consider for my Dear Richard Column, send it through my special Dear Richard Submission form here.  Oh, and for you clubhouse members, we'll be keeping all of the Dear Richard answers in a searchable archive in the clubhouse.

If your letter is of a more personal nature and NOT for this column, please send it here

QUESTION:

Hi Richard, My name is Sharon and I am only a teenager. I have struggled with my weight all my life and I want to change my life for the better but I don't know how to do it or where to start. I desperately need some guidance and help. Where do i start? Thanks, Sharon

ANSWER:

Sharon,

How wonderful that you are wanting to start taking care of yourself at such a young age.  The way to start is by taking an inventory to see where you are right now.  Weigh yourself, measure yourself....then take a close look at how you've really been living your life.  What kinds of foods are you eating?  Are you getting in exercise?  Is it enough? What are the things that are standing in your way that you let keep you from getting healthy?

Once you've done that, you will be able to see where you most need to change things.  Then, you can develop a plan for yourself.  Shop for healthy food.  Plan a week's worth of meals.  Schedule your exercise. Most importantly...just start!  And be sure to take a "before" photo of yourself!   Take care of yourself, Sharon, and let me know how you're doing!

Love,
Richard
